1968年，电影导演让·吕克-戈达尔已经获得了太多的成功。 这一年，电影界前辈、法国电影资料馆馆长亨利·郎格洛瓦提出了整个电影史应该以"戈达尔前"与"戈达尔后"两个概念来划分的论点。在他看来，38岁的哥达尔结束了一个时代也开创了一个时代。 著名作家路易·阿拉贡早在1965年就已经说过："今天的艺术就是戈达尔。"著名存在主义哲学家萨特也宣称："在戈达尔的影片里，学问太多了。" 其实，除了处女作《筋疲力尽》获得1960年西柏林电影节最佳导演奖、《狂人比挨洛》获得1965年威尼斯国际电影节青年评论奖、《中国姑娘》获得1967年威尼斯电影节评委会特别奖外，戈达尔导演的其他几十部影片，并没有给他带来很好的声誉，大多数观众看戈达尔的电影，不是不知所措，就是焦躁不安。 或许，戈达尔生来就是电影的敌人。 在1967年拍摄的《周末》里，他让动作停止--两个倒垃圾的人直接对着一部摄象机谈话，长达7分钟之久。在这部影片的开头部分，一个仅仅穿着乳罩和短裤的女人，坐在半明半暗的一张桌子上，直接对着一部推近拉远的摄象机说话，详细的叙述她参加的一次狂欢。这个段落也持续了好几分钟。思想激进的戈达尔，用这种方式与好莱坞抗衡。因为在他看来，好莱坞电影流畅的剪辑和快速的节奏，是为了迎合观众，进而麻痹观众，使他们沉湎在白日梦中，甘心情愿的忍受资产阶级的剥削。他甚至认为，电影本身就是资产阶级的，要反抗资产阶级，就需要把电影的传统全部粉碎。这样不象电影的电影，才使值得拍摄的好电影。
