1923年。伦敦的一个美丽夏日，所有人都平静且安逸地生活着。议员理查德·达洛卫Richard Dalloway（约翰·斯坦丁饰）52岁的夫人克拉丽莎Clarissa（瓦妮莎·雷德格雷夫饰）正在为晚上即将在家中举行的盛大舞会做着准备：光彩照人的晚礼服，丰盛的餐点，闪闪发光的银质餐具，整洁明亮的客厅。她将一切都布置得井井有条，想让所有的人都能通过舞会获得一份好心情，当然也以此来填补自己生活的空虚。

午后，一位客人彼得·沃尔什Peter Walsh（迈克尔·基钦饰）的无预期造访将克拉丽莎平静的心情击起了涟漪，也将她的思绪带回到了上个世纪末——1890年的那个夏天。当时的克拉丽莎（娜塔莎·麦克尔洪饰）是那样的年轻漂亮，拥有众多的追求者，而彼得（艾伦·考克斯饰）就是其中之一，他们愉快地度过了整个夏天，彼得本以为克拉丽莎将成为他的妻子，但理查德（罗伯特·波特尔饰）的出现很快便使他的期望化为乌有。渴望安定生活的克拉丽莎嫁给了沉稳的理查德，而彼得则选择远走他乡去了印度。

30年后，再次出现在克拉丽莎面前的彼得仍在被感情所困扰，而面对昔日的恋人，克克拉丽莎也被一种无法抗拒的东西深深地打动，她开始厌倦上流社会的虚伪和乏味，似乎看到了隐藏在一个个身着光鲜的客人背后那一张张丑陋的面孔。悠扬的乐曲中，克拉丽莎与彼得翩翩起舞，同时也共同渴望着真实而美好的生活...
